Tips & tricks
Habits and systems — open one topic.
Systems beat willpower Automate the boring bits; ignore the guilt content
Saving money fails when it needs daily heroics. Build defaults: one bill day, one shop rule, one card wallet, one autopay. You shouldn’t need motivation to not waste cash.
- Default to cheaper option
- Calendar > memory
- One habit at a time
- Ignore “optimisation porn”
Free money first Perk cards, cashback, loyalty — claim before you cut
Before you cancel joy, collect every free/cheap card you’re eligible for. Totum (many routes — students, adult learners, CSSC members, public sector…), Blue Light, Charity Worker Discounts (volunteers count), Defence Discount, UNiDAYS / Student Beans, employer portals, Scottish Friendly My Benefits — and ask about Company Shop / CSSC nomination slots.
Then stack cashback where you already shop (TopCashback / Quidco style sites, supermarket apps, credit-card rewards you’ll clear in full). Never buy something just for points.
Bills & energy The boring wins that beat coupon hunting
Big bills: energy, broadband, mobile, insurance. Small friction, large pounds.
- Energy — check if you’re on a fair tariff; use a comparison when you’re out of contract. Smart meter / Home Assistant habits cut idle waste without freezing the house. Smart home ideas
- Broadband & mobile — note contract end dates in your calendar 6–8 weeks early. Retention teams often beat “new customer” prices if you threaten to leave.
- Water / council tax — meter if it suits your household; check discounts/exemptions you’re entitled to (single person, benefits, disability routes).
- Direct debits — one annual “bill audit” afternoon beats random scrolling. Screenshot every DD; cancel zombies.
Banking & idle money Switching bonuses, pots, and stop 0% interest rot
Cash sitting in a 0% current account is a silent leak. Tricks that still work when you keep them simple:
- Current-account switches — when a bank offers a switch bonus and you meet the rules (pay-ins, DD count), take it. Use the Current Account Switch Service; track requirements in a note so you don’t miss the bonus.
- Separate pots — bills / fun / buffer. Easy-access savings for the buffer; don’t chase every 0.1% rate change weekly.
- Payday autopilot — standing order to savings the morning pay hits, before the week can eat it.
- Credit — 0% purchase / balance-transfer cards only if you’ll clear before interest. Never carry revolving interest as a “strategy.”
Food & eating out Waste less, pay less, still eat well
- Olio — free surplus nearby (neighbours + shop rescues).
- Too Good To Go — Surprise Bags for a fraction of retail.
- Yellow stickers — late-day supermarket reductions; freeze same night.
- Tastecard / Boundless dining — only if you already eat out enough.
- Shop list from the fridge — plan 3 dinners around what’s already there; delivery apps as a treat, not a default.
Shopping tricks Price tools, gift cards, 24-hour cool-offs
- 24-hour rule — anything over a set amount (pick £20 / £50) waits a day. Carts clear themselves.
- Price history — CamelCamelCamel / Keepa-style tools for Amazon; don’t trust “was £199” banners.
- Gift cards at a discount — via workplace portals or reputable resellers when you’d buy there anyway.
- Buy nothing / marketplace first — Olio, Facebook Marketplace, Freecycle for furniture and kids’ kit.
- Brand emails — sign up, grab the 10% welcome code, unsubscribe. Or use a shopping alias email.
Subscriptions & silent drains Trials, duplicates, “I’ll cancel later”
Streaming, cloud storage, gyms, apps, boxes, antivirus you forgot. One monthly 15-minute scan beats a year of silent renewals.
- List every recurring charge from bank + PayPal + Apple/Google.
- Keep what you used in the last 30 days; cancel or downgrade the rest in the same sitting.
- Free trials: calendar invite on day 1 titled “CANCEL X” — not “think about X.”
- Share family plans when the maths works (and the household actually uses them).
Travel & days out Railcards, off-peak, membership attractions
- Railcards — 16–25, 26–30, Two Together, Senior, Disabled, Family & Friends: often pay for themselves in 1–2 long trips.
- Advance + off-peak — set alerts; split tickets only when a trusted tool shows a real saving.
- Attraction memberships — CSSC (English Heritage / Cadw), Boundless (Kew / WWT / Plus tiers), Kids Pass — only if you’ll visit enough times.
- Fuel / parking — supermarket fuel offers, park-and-ride, car share for regular routes.
Insurance renewals Never click “renew” on autopilot
Loyalty often costs more. 3–4 weeks before car / home / gadget renewal: compare, then ask your current insurer to match. Check optional extras you never claim on. Bundling can help — or hide a bad deal. Read the excess.
Tax, benefits & reclaiming Money you’re already owed
- Check you’re on the right tax code (HMRC app / Personal Tax Account).
- Marriage Allowance / High Income Child Benefit Charge — only if it applies to you.
- Work-from-home / uniform / mileage relief where eligible — keep simple records.
- Benefits & discounts you qualify for (council schemes, Warm Home, etc.) — gov.uk / local council pages beat random Facebook posts.
Rules change — verify on official sites before you act.
One simple money system Weekly 10 minutes · monthly 30 minutes · yearly bill day
- Weekly (10 min) — glance at transactions; flag anything weird; check Olio / TGTG if you use them.
- Monthly (30 min) — subscription scan; move leftover to buffer pot; one price comparison (mobile / insurance / energy) if a renewal is near.
- Yearly — refresh perk cards; switch deals; emergency fund top-up target; cancel what you didn’t use.
- Always on — payday standing order to savings; calendar for trials and contract ends.
- Timers > vibes
- Same day each week
- Done > perfect
